Is it too late to say Happy New Year? I don’t think so! Happy New Year, ya’ll! How was your New Years Eve? Let me know in the comments. My husband and I (our first new years together as a married couple) went out for a late dinner with a few friends and rang in the new year together! It was oh so lovely.
There is something so refreshing about a new year. It always feels like a fresh start which is so incredibly motivating when trying to think of things that you want to change and improve on within the new year. Leading up to January 1st, I try to get all my ducks in a row if you will. This year was no different, and that being said, I put together my goals for 2018 that I plan to accomplish and have planned accordingly to do so. It always feels so rewarding to actually jot down all of my goals and ideas in my head onto paper, and plan out how I am going to make them a success in the new year. Below are goals that I will be constantly reminding myself to follow through on:
Out with the old. In with the new. Nothing defines the term “start with a clean slate” better than cleaning out all of your rubbish. A few days before New Years, I started off by going through my closet and cleaning out all of my clothes. I organized my things from what I want to keep, to what I want to sell, to what I want to donate. Then, I did a full clean out of my drawers and got rid of all of the garbage. I took down my Christmas decor because unfortunately, that holiday has passed, and I did an intense cleaning of my condo. I know that this probably sounds like the last thing you want to do after the holiday season (and I probably sound kind of crazy), but doing all of that really helped me feel like I was getting a fresh start at life.
Start a new hobby. This year, my new hobby is calligraphy. I went out and bought a beginners book and a bunch of pens/markers. I’m doing this! It’s my goal to learn calligraphy. I always found calligraphy to be so beautiful and I have always wanted to start doing it. Plus, it didn’t help that I kept watching bullet journal tutorials on YouTube (it really amazes me how some people can do so much with a blank page). Anyways, I find it very rewarding to start a new hobby or devote more time to a hobby you really enjoy. It’s important to give yourself the time to grow and develop new skills while doing things you really love. It’s quite the outlet for everyone!
Put more focus on my health. Last year, I was absolutely horrible to my body. I really did not treat it like the temple that our bodies really are. I fed it poorly and barely worked out. I was one who used to exercise 4-5 times a week; I used to dance and cheerlead growing up, and I was in such great shape. This year, a huge goal of mine is to find a workout that works for me and gets the job done. I also am going to start transiting into a plant-based diet. I tried doing this last year (and failed). During the time I did attempt to eat plant-based, I actually felt a huge difference in my energy levels. I felt a lot more energetic for longer periods of time, and I felt overall a lot lighter. When I eat meat and dairy, I tend to feel very sluggish and my stomach feels very unsettled. This year is definitely my year to transition my diet to a better one for me.
Find an internship or a job (even better) in the fashion industry. This one is quite the toughy, but I am determined to do this. I am graduating from college this month (yay!) and I am on a hunt for a job in the fashion industry. I know how hard it can be to get a job, so my goal is to try getting an internship and to volunteer, and then go from there. I am constantly looking at job postings to see what is out there. I know I can do this!
Step out of my comfort zone, socially. I am one who tends to feel incredibly awkward in a lot of social situations. I am quite the listener, but I really dislike talking. I truly believe this stems with perhaps not feeling the most comfortable in my own skin and with my skills, so that is one thing I really want to accomplish this year. I want to gain more confidence while speaking with others, both people I feel comfortable with and people that I don’t. This is quite a big goal because I feel like this is a result to a lot of other things that I consider changeable, personality wise. I have had this goal before, and I have gotten better so I do think this is something that can be accomplished, slowly but surely. Perhaps going to more events and learning how to network, or practicing small talk can help me succeed.
Read more. I have so many books just collecting dust on my bedside table that I need to finally whip out and read. I meant well when I bought the books, I swear! What I find that I do is that I will start a book, get through a chapter, and then not go back to the book because I won’t put reading that book into my everyday routine. My goal is to devote time every night before I go to bed to read a chapter. Doing this will help me wind down (which I need to do sans phone), and hopefully, go to bed a lot earlier than I currently do. I’m really excited for this one!
I now want to declare Sundays as “me days”. Sundays are mine now. I made a vow to myself that this year I would put more time into bettering myself, and I am a firm believer in giving yourself time to grow and reflect, so you feel comfortable in your own skin. Keeping a day as a day for just yourself sounds so incredibly rewarding and relaxing. Sundays (for me) are going to consist of
- practicing yoga when I wake up
- grocery shopping for the week
- devoting a lot of time to my favorite item (my agenda that is)
- going for a walk to a local coffee shop, with a book in hand, and enjoying some alone time to read
- having a pamper night (face masks and all)
Work on my finances. This is a huge goal (and my husband would agree). I am horrible with money. I can spend it, but I cannot save it for the life of me. My goal is to organize a budget and to really stick to it. My husband and I want to buy a house soon, and we need to do the appropriate saving to do so. I have created an excel sheet that has our budget all organized, so I am banking (no pun intended) on that to help us out.
Tech Cleanse. This is necessary for me. I am always on my phone or laptop. This year, a goal of mine is to part ways with my phone an hour or so before bed. I am one to always check my phone before bed, and wake up during the night to do the same thing. There are so many studies that show how the light from your phone effects your sleeping pattern, as well as just constantly engaging your brain with activities on your phone. I know I need to have a tech cleanse for my own well-being, so I think that learning to say bye to my phone before a certain time at night will definitely help.
What are your goals for 2018? Let me know in the comments below. I know they are hard to follow through on sometimes, but as long as you have a plan and you have the will to want to change, you can do it. You can do it!
